Star trails circling above Crater Lake
Star Trails over Crater Lake
Exposure Time: 2 Hours

Without a tracking setup, long exposures of stars will reveal their apparent rotation around the north star due to the earth's continual rotation. I was surprised that from 1-3am, there was always at least one other photographer at the same location. Night photography must be getting popular.

Milky Way panorama over Joshua Tree National Park
Milky Way in Joshua Tree
Exposure Time: 30 seconds

Light pollution in Joshua Tree is minimal compared to most places in California, but is still easily seen on the horizon from the big cities hundreds of miles away.

Milky Way Core over Mineral King Peak
Exposure Time: 8 seconds

This short exposure of 8 seconds found a happy balance with just enough moonlight to illuminate the foreground while preserving contrast in the Milky Way.
